When I despair

When I despair

I pour my grief in loops and spools on the page

Watching words flow from the pen

Naming each piercing sorrow

Describing the intimate parts of my psyche that

Cry out in distress and pain.

When I despair

I shape those words into coherent

Pleas for someone, anyone, to hear

Hoping to reach another whose

Experience touches mine.

When I despair

I find the act of writing

Moves me from the place of

Abject helplessness to

Act, perhaps in the smallest way

Towards a possible hope,

A future version of her and me

And the world around us.
